Take a Moment and Breathe

Dr. Alexandria helps us to understand breathing and the importance of taking a deep breath.

As summer comes to an end and we begin to welcome a new season it is time to reflect. It is time to begin to slow and sow, to harvest, and prepare for winter. To take in the last rays of sun and the warmth that is brings our Pacific Northwest lives. The mornings are getting cooler and our days are getting shorter. We are still enjoying the summer flowers; calendula, cosmos, zinnias, and dahlias. The summer squash is still fruiting and the winter squash is beginning to take on the colors of fall. There is a crispness in the air and the smoke has finally cleared. It is the perfect time to stop and take a breath.

Here is an easy breathing exercise that requires no equipment, can be done at home, at the office, or even in the comfort of your after work clothes. The only thing you need is to take a few moments and a few deep breaths.

Resonance Breathing

Inhale for the count of six seconds, then exhale for a count of six seconds. Try to set aside four to five minutes each day for this. It ends up being 20 to 25 breaths. With each inhale allow your breath to fill your lungs and push your diaphragm down. With each exhale feel your diaphragm rise and relax upwards and allow your breath to flow outwards. Try to let go of your day and just focus on your breath. If thoughts come in acknowledge them and let them pass, bring your attention back to your breath.

If you only have a few moments each day for this then that is all you need. Don’t worry if you are not able to do all 25 breaths, start with one.
